With its almost black appearance, reminiscent of teak wood (not sustainable), a new eye-catcher is created.

The dark color is created by a heating process in which the wood is heated to 160-220 degrees Celsius in the absence of oxygen. This causes the wood to become permanently discolored and is not washable—as one might think.

Despite this, ash is a very hard wood and is often used for broom handles. This speaks volumes about the robustness of this wood, making it ideal for use as a cutting board or as a breakfast board (with a wow factor).
